SCS Engineers Earns Engineering Design Services Contract for Miramar Landfill

SAN DIEGO, Calif. —SCS Engineers, an environmental engineering and contracting firm, was chosen by Fortistar to provide engineering design services to expand its Gas Collection and Control System (GCCS) at the West Miramar Landfill in San Diego, California.

Although the City of San Diego operates the West Miramar Landfill, Fortistar operates the GCCS which includes flare stations, compression and boost stations, and an energy recovery plant serving all active and closed areas of the Miramar landfill complex.

SCS’s scope of services under this project will include preparation of an initial design consisting of a topographic survey, records research, and preliminary well field layout; preparation of final design plans and specifications including an engineering estimate; construction quality assurance services during construction and preparation of as-built drawings.

The capacity of this landfill gas-fired power plant is 3.2 megawatt which will provide to the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar approximately 25,000 megawatt-hours of electricity—the power consumed each month by about 2,461 homes. About half of the volume of landfill gas is methane.

“This project further establishes San Diego’s leadership in green tech and clean tech,” said Pat Sullivan, Vice President and Project Director with SCS Engineers.  “The project also supplies the Miramar base with almost half of the energy it needs to operate.”

In April of this year SCS completed a design-build project for the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Facility.  This was the first commercial project in California to purify wastewater treatment digester gas for injection in the San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) natural gas delivery systems.

The Miramar Landfill well field design project will be led by SCS Senior Vice President and Project Director Pat Sullivan and Project Manager Robert Johnson
