Landfill Gas Control, Collection, Recovery, and Utilization

SCS-FS Construction provides the construction and installation of all components of new landfill gas systems and expansions: vertical wells and horizontal collectors, header piping and laterals, condensate drains, pumps and storage tanks, blowers, flares and monitoring probes. SCS has provided construction services for new facilities, including major repairs and modifications at more than 600 landfill gas facilities.

SCS-FS has been providing turn-key landfill gas well installation services since 1985. SCS-FS has the ability to provide landfill gas well drilling to any depth, anywhere, nationwide. The installation of new gas extraction wells includes drilling, logging, construction, pilot hole and testing.

Stormwater management is an important consideration for manufacturers, solid waste facility owners, and real estate developers. SCS-FS implements simple, effective approaches to preventing and controlling erosion, sediment, and contaminant discharges from new construction and established facilities.

SCS-FS provides the construction and installation of complete collection systems to manage leachate at landfills. The systems frequently involve the fabrication and installation of single and dual contained sumps for leachate, condensate, and other constituents. Accompanying pumps, airline, and forcemain piping installation is also often needed, as well as connection to the LFG collection system.

SCS-FS provides construction and operation of direct use, electricity generation, liquefied and compressed natural gas projects using biogases from landfills, agricultural operations, and coal beds. SCS’s electric energy services have focused on distributed energy systems, particularly reciprocating engine technologies. SCS has developed specialized SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems that allow for efficient remote control of these small-scale energy projects. SCS has also applied these technologies and services to other biogas systems (e.g., anaerobic sludge digester gas).
 

Landfill Gas to Energy - Pipelines

SCS-FS specializes in landfill gas and transmission pipelines, which few other contractors offer. While there are contractors who specialize in transmission pipelines, and there are contractors who specialize in landfill gas, there are few who truly are specialists in both. A significant portion of SCS’s landfill gas to energy projects involve direct use of landfill gas in a variety of applications (e.g., brick kilns, boilers, heaters, etc.). These projects typically require transportation of the landfill gas through pipelines in accordance with State and Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. LFG systems on landfills typically are not required to comply with DOT regulations because they are not constructed in areas under DOT jurisdiction. Transmission line projects, however, frequently fall under DOT jurisdiction and require specialized DOT experience.
 

Landfill Closure and Post-Closure Care

Along with landfill design and construction services, SCS also understands the long-term requirements to properly close a landfill and use it for beneficial purposes. This includes capping, stormwater control, erosion control, LFG, leachate collection and management, re-vegetation, groundwater monitoring, mitigation of settlement, and environmental compliance.

Landfill Redevelopment

SCS is one of the world’s leading authorities on landfill and fill site redevelopment. There is no substitution for experience when it comes to addressing methane gas, foundation support, subsurface combustion, and worker health and safety concerns at a closed site. Although closed landfills present challenges for development, particularly with respect to settlement and gas migration, SCS provides proven approaches in structural engineering and environmental remediation.
