Green remediation is the use of best management practices (BMPs) to reduce the environmental footprint of actions designed to clean up contaminated media (soil, groundwater, etc.) and return impacted property to productive use. It is recognized by EPA and many states as a preferred approach to site remediation. Typically, a green remediation project will:

  1. reduce the total amount of energy use, decrease use of non-renewable energy, and/or increase use of renewable energy;
  2. reduce impacts to water resources;
  3. reduce the production of greenhouse gases and air pollutants;
  4. reduce the use of raw materials and the generation of waste and
  5. protect ecosystems and land resources.

SCS has significant experience providing green remediation services including project management and oversight, participation in community and stakeholder education, development of contract documents (IFB, RFQs, RFPs, etc.) and technical specifications, BMP design, monitoring and documentation of BMP performance, reporting, and certification. SCS has successfully completed several green remediation projects including EPA approved cleanup of Brownfields sites. SCS is participating in several state and national efforts to develop green remediation standards including serving on the ASTM task group responsible for developing a Standard Guide for Greener and More Sustainable Cleanups.
